That's great Don! What are the specs on "Scrap Iron"?

I tried pulling a friend behind my boat, but with the small reserve of the monotube and the lag time between heavy steam consumption and the controls kicking the burner back on, he was only able to get up for a few seconds before settling back down in the water. I suppose my relatively puny 15x17" prop is also to blame.


There was a steam launch out in these parts named the "Arrow" that was a Panatella design modified to 30'x4'-10" with a torpedo stern. Power was from a Mills compound and a watertube boiler. She made 11 knots and was quite capable of pulling a skier. She is being restored back to steam as we speak after a 30 year hiatus.

You had me fooled for a moment until I watched the video. With those small people on those giant skis you could probably tow them with a rowing shell. Good skiers though!

What was he making? Maybe six knots? I hope this doesn't start a new hobby of low speed water skiing.

The Scrap Iron can sustain speeds of 11 knots, she pulled the 2 skiers for about 8 minutes making three large loops around the lake front. the girls told them if they can get 2 more knots some other time they could do tricks. Scrap Iron weighs 3 tons, has a large VFT boiler and a 5 X 7 single made my H. Rickford in Cakeport, NH...she put on a few nice spark shows at night as well since she is a puffer. more pics are located in my photobucket at
