Hello Fellow Steamers
A boiler upgrade has now started. My old boiler was just too small, length of the boiler just 9 inches. So knowing Pete the Pen had a spare pressure vessel of a suitable size a couple of emails and he has kindly dropped off a Lune Valley innards and a few bits and bobs. There is still a lot of work to do to complete the boiler, install and pipe up.
So I will be looking for advice on all of these. Of course my Boiler Inspector will be consulted along the way.
Here is a photo of the old boiler before any changes.

Such a small boiler, looks like it might be at home in a canoe or similar. Any plans to sell it?

Yes, once my new boiler is up and running, I am planning on selling this one. I have very nice ST no1 which will go with it.

At the moment I have been sorting out the endplates that seal the ends of the two drums. They have been drilled differently to the drawings, however after speaking to the builder I have the holes sorted. Building the casing should not be too differcult, but where I am going to need advice is the piping up.

I have been working on the casing frame still. The pressure vessel is very heavy appox 40 kg, so needs some strong supporting framework. I am also trying to decide on the height of the grate to give enought height for the coal bed and to the conbustion space, while still leaving enought depth for the wet ash pan. The grate is 12inches by 18 inches
Do these figure sound OK to you.
depth of ashpan 3 inches
top of grate to bottom of firehole door 3 inches
top of grate to bottom of watertubes 71/2inches.

Mike.
Did you run the St#1 with that boiler you are selling or have sold?
Wanting to build something small in the 16 foot length and have a ST 1 that potentially could become motive power. Even if it is not a marine engine it could turn a prop of 8.5" I have.

I have not run the ST1 yet, but it did come out of a boat called Splijn, which was a 16 foot boat and went quite well. Details of Splijn are on the SBA register. I have just found two other boats in the register which also used the ST1. Chough another 16 foot boat and Folly a nine footer. As long as you keep the weight down should be Ok.

Mike.
I am looking to build something along the lines of Reciproca, Kelly Andersons old boat which obviously is easily driven and easily constructed from ply and epoxy.
No drawings available so will to do it myself. She is everything I want in a steam powered boat.
Will draw up and build a 1/4 size model first and have a Stuart Double Ten engine and small boiler that may provide motive power...and inspiration.
Will look up your references.
