What is everyone doing with regard to painting their engines?

I pulled mine and am thinking about painting it. Is powder coating an option, or is a one or two part paint better?

You do need to be temperature aware with powder-coating. It melts!

I dont know off-hand, at what temperature though. I suggest a word with your local supplier is called for.

I use regular spray paint sold here in he states as Engine enamel intended for automotive engines. Sold at any auto parts store. I superheat on one and it's held up just fine.

They make ceramic powdercoats now, suitable for use on automotive exhaust manifolds and headers
They have good insulating qualities (like 1500* inside the header and only 200* outside kind of good) I've been considering doing a Cylinder block, or at least the insides and outsides of the heads to help retain some heat.


I have seen heavy enamel used as well.

I second engine enamel.

I used it on a marsh steam pump and have been very happy with it.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't even think about regular powder coating melting with superheated steam. I'm going to try Eastwoods high temp engine paint in the nice old ford blue color. It is supposedly good to 650 F. I'll let you know how it turns out.
