I was minding my own business steaming along the other day, when I came upon this scene, something that I had never seen before!


The tow boat was Dan Baima's Stoked, still a work in progress in this shapely 25' hull.

Well Why Not!! Good advertising for steam boats.

My S.L. Cluaran's hull is from Thistle sailboat plans. And Thistles have pulled water skiers under sail!
Yes, with those small water skis, not today's paddle boards. Planing along at 15+ knots is quite a rush!!

I tried doing that with my launch with a buddy on a short surfboard... My boat would get him up, but then he'd sink down and just get dragged. The monotube had the initial oomf to do it, but not the capacity to sustain it while the burner caught up. Downside of mechanical automatic control with no manual overide...

I believe there are photos of Otto or Mosquito towing legitimate water skiers on Lake Windermere. There was a launch out here named 'Arrow' that was essentially a 25' panatella hull with a 5' canoe stern on her, powered by a Beaumaris/Mills compound and a yarrow style watertube boiler. She too could pull water skiers, but was so lightly built that she suffered a lot of structural issues.

Kelly, any more information on the powerplant of 'Stoked'?

nice picture, what is Stocked's speed?

A few years ago we (Rainer Radow, his brother and I) were out and about with Rainer Radow's EMMA on the Berlin lakes. To keep the beer cool we hung the bottles on strings outboard. To my great surprise, however, they behaved like surfboards and came to the surface of the water. EMMA's speed was leisurely, so the behavior of the bottles was totally unexpected.

I’m a little vague on details about her plant. She has a VFT boiler, though I believe it is smaller than the usual 40 sq. ft. The engine is a single cylinder Semple engine IIRC.

Nothing out of the ordinary, 6 to 6.5 MPH. She is towing a paddle board, which has enough buoyancy to float with a person standing on it, so Dan is cheating in that regard.

Thanks for posting the pictures. It helps to remind us that steamboaters and not all serious folk worried about their slide vales.
