Just wondering what is considered essential safety equipment on a steam boat, fire extinguisher, first aid kit etc. Then also, what is carried in the line of tools and spares. It would be interesting to see what boat owners think in this regard

Fire extinguisher, perhaps! matches and firelighters, definitely!
Decent waterproof clothing- breathable and windproof.
Rags- mopping up rain, oil, polish, wine, mud, children fluids etc. etc....
Mobile phone, and depending on where you sail, a VHF radio.

Anytime working around fire of any sort, I wouldn't leave the dock without a can of Bag Balm in my tool box. Plus it passed as "first aid kit" on my safety inspection this past June.
In regard to tools, I use lots of socket head cap screws on my boat so Allen wrenches, both ball end and socket fit, are as important as a couple sizes of pipe wrenches. Also, allow space for a roll of teflon tape and a roll or two of valve stem packing, either graphite rope or my choice, VSP.
