Wrapping Hot Lines

All,
Has anyone used Sisal rope to wrap lines ? I know that white cotton is widely used, but thought that the buff colored Sisal might not get grubby as fast.

The part that is usually left out (and is used with the sash cord) is to paint same with white high gloss enamel. Then you can just scrub this down with soap and water.

Do I soak the rope and then wrap the pipes so that it shrinks into place ?

I like to paint the line with white rubber meant for sealing trailer roofs - works well and doesn't take so many coats as enamel.
Covering w/ canvas and lagging adhesive also works well.

Guys,
What diameter rope are you using ? My daughter knows how to make a pretty cool looking spiral braid pattern. I was going to try that. Do you get much insulating power out of it or is it just to keep from getting scalded ?
