I was reading "A Treasury of Railroad Folklore. In this story a locomotive was brought into the back shop for a repair evaluation. in the end the back shop foreman's report read " to return this locomotive to serviceable condition, jack up her whistle and build a new locomotive underneath".

Then I looked in the corner and wondered how big a boat I would have to build under it.

Not a lot. I had the great fortune to midshipman aboard HMS Sabre in 1971. Three 9,000 shp gas turbines exhausting through the transom gave us 3.2 knots.

I have a replica A4 locomotive whistle, which is maybe to be fair half that size, but also three-chime and it makes the boat.

The bloke who made it wouldnt make it unless we could supply a 3/4inch feed to it, which we did, and it needs. Uses about as much if not more than the engine uses running fairly hard, but at the same time, is only sounded for very short periods.

We could turn this into a "SHOW ME YOUR WHISTLE " type post. Have a whistle your-- proud of , built your self or just something unusual? Show us and tel us about it.

I already posted the photo , I removed this whistle on September 9th 1991 from the Masonite factory in Watsontown PA USA. I grew up about 1/4 mile or so away as the crow flies. It blew about 7 times a day.

The first photo is an aerial view of Watsontown circa 1977 featuring the Zenith plant(at the time) in the upper left hand there is a v shaped patch of woods Masonite is at the bottom of that v

Close up of Masonite, and it's interesting that just to the right of the base of the smokestack is a 8" Lonergan whistle being blown.
