Looks like a Stanley, or Locomobile engine. Definately not a compound.

I think it is either an industrial hoisting engine or an engine from a steamroller. It is built heavier than typical for a marine engine, and certianly too heavy for an automotive engine. Early steamrollers followed steam traction engine practice, but later models used this type of engine for quick and sure reversals so that the road surface would not get a "dent", which often occured with IC engined rollers.

I thought it looked a little auto-ish too. If so, I'd suspect it to be a Mason. Someone said the other day that the Mason/Locomobile/Stanley upright type engines were all designed by George Whitney - Grandson of Eli Whitney. Talented family there, Whitney chain company, Pratt-Whitney. (He's in Modern Steamboats and Steam Launches as well)

Wish I knew for sure if I'd ever be in the mood to build a larger Tug, I'd be interested in that. Unusual engine.

The Governor on the Craiglist Engine seems to match the Governor on the Buffalo Steam Roller?

Indeed it does , I stand corrected . Its the first time I've seen a governor on anything other than a static engine . Was this common practice in North America ?

I helped scrap out an elevator engine once that looked like that and had a governor. It was installed horizontally.
