Real Machine Shop Tools

Post by Brenton Baker »

We've been in the new Buckeye house for about a week, and now that we're sleeping on real beds and washing with softened water, I figure we're settled enough to finally get some real tools. Yesterday, the Fedex Man dropped off five boxes from Micro Mark: a 7x16 lathe; bedway for lathe; work table for a 16x3.75 mill; and two boxes of accessories for both. The rest of the mill will (hopefully) arrive later today, though I still need to get a table for it.

Here is the whole garage as it currently stands:

Most of those boxes are full of junk we didn't have time to throw away before the movers showed up. The rest will be stored in the fourth bedroom (this house is almost twice the size of the house we left in California, at half the price).

Here is the lathe after about three and a half hours of assembly (most of that was wiping off grease and oil), with all accessories on the table:

Among the accessories: a 4-jaw independent chuck; steady rest; follower rest; carbide cutting tools; digital readouts for X and Y axes; a 7-piece reamer set; radius turning tool; dog; face plate, and clamping kit for same; tool holder; rotating tail stock; 4 center drills; and indicator dial with magnetic base. Cost for above, including lathe: ~$2,075.

(I don't know what many of these things do, but I watched the machinists at the museum fabricate valves for engines and various other things, and I'm sure I'll be fine if I take it slow and use common sense. At any rate, I've got a set of plans for a .22 Gatling gun I can use to practice before I try for anything important)
