Perhaps a little late but I just found this picture of a great engine with the telegraph cables, chains and turnbuckles all in plain sight. It shows exactly how a working setup would be.

Hey Jack, you may be late to the conversation, but your link was GREAT and will prove very helpful. Probably the best and clearest representation for the EOT install arrangement. I have worked out most of what I plan to do already in my mind, seriously, it's just an EOT, not a cellphone app.....Hahaha. But, I really appreciate you taking the time to post the link and pitching in to the collective wisdom that is our little Steamboating community. Well done!

Yep. Same setup as I know - sprocket chain coming off the body of the telegraph with tension adjusters connecting to the wire cable. Note that the unit has a repeater which allows the engine room to signify that they have received the signal from the bridge by "repeating" it.

Ron, my matching set of EOT's have two smooth channeled wheels inside. One for the command lever and one for the repeater indicator. Both smooth channeled, but each with a small hole drilled in the fairing of the wheel I suspect is where a cable is to be inserted, then locked in place somehow. A cable to pull one direction and a cable to pull the other direction for each wheel. I don't see the use for a sprocketed chair when there are no "spokes" on either wheel. Would that be your estimation as well?

Mack,
Without seeing the exact setup I would think that the cable should run around the shieves at both ends ( bridge-engine room) with the ends comming together at a turnbuckle. This would make it very easy to to match the indicators by slipping the cable and then locking it to the shieve when things are correct.
The sternwheeler Portland has an interesting feature of a wrong way alarm that operates with the EOT and the position of the reversing gear. When the engine room EOT receives a direction order a cam inside closes a switch activating a very loud bell and read light which will continue to ring, even afte answering up on the EOT, until the circuit is broken by place reversing gear in a dierction that matches with the order given. It's quit simple four contact switches and a circular cam. Oh yes it uses electricity

Yeh Dave, sort of what I thought. One cable would enter the EOT, wrap around the order shelve clockwise, and another around counter-wise, one to pull one way and another to pull the other way. Similar arrangement for the responding shelve.

I attached a little drawaing of what I was thinking of. In order to have the faces work right since they are mirrors of each other the would they would have to be configured as shown. If you needed to invert the engine room EOT it could be done but it would require crossing cables to provide proper rotation to keep ahead toward the pointy end of the boat. What I'm trying to show in the drawing is that the cables are rapped around the sheaves ( I too finally got it spelled right I ) with the ends cinnected at the turn buckle. The cable is secured to the sheaves with a clamping screw of some kind if that is possable.
