I would suggest it depends entirely on the size, shape and configuration, but if designed well, 16G (1.6mm) should be more than adequate.
Retirement is about doing what floats your boat!

Wet or dry ash pan? Stainless steel?
Ours is a dry ashpan, mild steel, around 5mm thick, but it also holds the weight of the point which is a fairly large firetube boiler!
